Spermicide prevents pregnancy by keeping the sperm from joining with the egg, or killing the sperm. Spermicide must be inserted deep into the vagina shortly before having sex. Just before having sex, you must insert the product high into the vagina using an appropriate applicator. Some condoms already have spermicide on them. The sperm die when they come into contact with the chemicals contained in the spermicide. To use spermicide you insert the spermicide within a half hour before intercourse. Add more spermicide for repeated intercourse. Leave your spermicide in your vagina for 8 hours after the last act of intercourse and do not douche for 8 hours. Douching weakens spermicide. It is available in most drug stores and does not require a prescription.
